The first celebration of Earth Day was on
March 21, 1970. The first Proclamation of Earth Day was by San
Francisco, the City of Saint Francis, patron saint of ecology.
Designating the First Day of Spring, March 21, 1970 to be Earth
Day, this day of nature's equipoise was later sanctioned in a
Proclamation signed by Secretary General U Thant at the United
Nations where it is observed each year. Earth Day was firmly
established for all time on a sound basis as an annual event to
deepen reverence and care for life on our planet.
While other dates have been called Earth Day it is obvious that a
singular Earth Day is needed and that the original choice of
nature's day is best. More attention for this fact will increase
the influence of Earth Day and its benefits.
Every effort to encourage Earth care is to be commended. But just
as more than one birthday each year for an individual would
diminish the real birthday, calling other dates Earth Day
detracts from the authentic day -- which can provide a more
meaningful focus and obtain more unity in our diversity. The
nature of the March equinox provides a reason for an event at the
same time all over the world.
Other events leading up to or following could be called Earth
Festivals, or given other names. Then events can complement each
other and increase awareness and care for our planet and its
people. In the midst of this will be Earth Day, where the United
Nations Peace Bell rings at the moment Spring begins and hearts
and minds join all over the world.

I'm going to be teaching a lesson on Earth Day beginning April
14 and continuing through April 22. I'd like to share your
Earth Magna Charta with my students. I'm sure my students
will pick up on the difference in dates, so I'd like to be
prepared in advance. Earth Day was originally supposed to
coincide with the beginning of spring, is that correct? How
and when did it come to be celebrated on different days than
that? Does the Peace Bell still ring at the moment spring
begins, or is it rung at a specified time on Earth Day?

I am a teacher at a private alternative high school for at
risk kids in Amherst NH. I have a couple of questions for
you. I would love to find out how my school can get
involved. Is there a mailing list? Any information
would be greatly appreciated. I love your website.

Please read the 77 thesis on
being an Earth Trustee by John McConnell for insight
on how to get involved.
We don't have a mailing list but do have a message board for
everyone to exchange ideas.
I think that what you do is a very vallient thing and I think
that more people need to think and act in the way that you do.
Thanks

I am a AmeriCorp*VISTA worker and we are planning some Earth Day activities for the children at our grade school where our Resource ARoom is. Can you give us some ideas on this subject please.

I teach first grade at an inner city Philadelphia
school. I am teaching my children about the environment and
would like any suggestions that you have that will help make my
students more aware of the impact they have on the
environment.

I am a science teacher for a home school enhancement group, I
would like to know if there is info I can obtain to present to
the children? We have a class of 5-7 year-olds and a class of
8-12 year-olds. I would like hands on project ideas and any eco
system info I can obtain. I do need this info rather quickly as
we start this project in two weeks. I am very upset about the
wrong date for Earth Day and will explain this to the children.
My sons Karate class is doing a fund raiser, which I run, for
earth day. Of course the focus is on the wrong date. I am so glad
that I found your articles on the web. Thank you for your efforts
and commitment. I would also like to know if I can obtain forms
for the children to fill out to become Earth Trustees?

I am also seeking funding for research into ecological agriculture wherein man would be achieving the state of absolute harmony with nature. Utilizing companion plantings, beneficial insect releases and resistant non- genetically engineered varieties. In this way I have grown many fruits and vegetables without the use of pesticides. The key is in maintaining biodiversity on the farm. All inquiries and donations are welcome. Thank You.

Every year, I co-sponsor an Earth party. We get a large
group of people together, we have a drumming, along with a barbecue. we plant trees and flowers at the local park. We
have a clean-up at the Mill Pond in Brighton. We do this on Earth
Day in April, I was unaware that the real date was in
March. We'll have to consider changing it, but
probably won't because the weather is still cold and snowy here
in Michigan in March. I'm also a musician/songwriter who
like others write songs about conservation/wilderness. My old
band released an album a few back with several enviro-songs on
it.

I would welcome ideas for ways to get involved in helping to
save our wonderful planet. Also, do you know how I can find
out about any Earth Day 1999 events happening in my area? I
did a search and sadly did not come up with anything happening
locally (Mid-Hudson Valley, NY).

I'm pro-life, but it's exactly for this reason that I wish
Clinton would be stopped very soon. He thinks he is being
righteous, but He's bombing in the name of peace and I am afraid
my earth will die soon if this continues.

offices and -
4. Support and encourage local community and environmental
activities.
Wal-Mart provides grants to non-profit organizations or schools
to support environmental efforts and education in the communities
where the stores are located. This year , I am
assigned to be the Green Coordinator for Wal-Mart Super center #0700 here in Selma, AL. I have an interest in the
environment and I am eager to take on the additional
responsibility. I need information that will help me be able to
develop a Green Team to help with the direction of the store's environmental program. Please help me get started.
Together we can make a difference.

I came across this site while researching information to help
me plan Earth Day events in the town of Killaloe. I hope to
involve children from my daughter's school in this, and becoming
an official Earth Trustee will help me keep my resolve to
dedicate some time to this most essential of causes.

We were placed on this planet to 'seed the stars', but we can
only do that if we care for our planet-home. It will take the
full effort of all of us--using every ounce of physical,
emotional and spiritual energy--to correct the damage we have
done so we can move on to our destiny in the Cosmos. I want to do
my part!
