Pierre Bourque, Mayor of Montreal from November 1994 to November 2001, and Carmen Colombo of Wish Only Well Communications Inc. - www.wowzone.com Photo by Joe Papa at the Mayor's Breakfast Meeting, held at Montreal City Hall in February 2001. At the meeting, Mayor Bourque explained the benefits of Montreal: One Island, One City Project, - also known as the Mega City Project, which his re-election campaign was based on. He lost the election in November because of resistance to, and the unpopularity of the Project. The Opposition's campaign was based on dismantling the Montreal Mega City Project, and that made them win the election. However, the law did go into effect and Montreal is, since January 2002, One Island, One City, as Pierre Bourque wanted. Montreal is now a Mega City. The only thing is, Pierre Bourque isn't Mayor anymore... Sometimes, life is stranger than fiction. But remember...it's not over yet. Personally, I definitely think that Pierre Bourque will run for mayor again. He reminds me of Jean Drapeau, a giant of a man who was the mayor of Montreal for decades, and who literally put Montreal on the international map with his visionary ideas and realizations like the Expo 67, Terre Des Hommes (Man and His World), the first and most modern underground Metro (subway) system, followed by the underground city. Of course, the 1976 Olympics was Mr. Drapeau's downfall. Montrealers will keep paying for it till hell freezes over. But despite that, Jean Drapeau will be remembered for his love of his city. It was blatantly obvious, and he was extremely proud of his beloved Montreal. Pierre Bourque reminds me of Jean Drapeau's passion for Montreal. That's why I think that he will run and be mayor again one day. Carmen Colombo Editor's note: As predicted above, Pierre Bourque did run again for Mayor of Montreal in 2005. The vote was held on November 6, 2005, and Pierre Bourque did NOT win. But watch him go...I'm sure he'll be back in four years! |
